Getting Rid of Cable

Let me be clear though – I am not a big TV watcher, so this may be different for others. I now watch virtually all of my TV online through Hulu or ITunes. Because of this, my wife and I are getting rid of cable (we are actually downgrading just to the network channels). Hopefully people like me will help get the attention of the telecoms. If I only watch one or two shows, and I can either watch them free online or purchase them through ITunes – why do I need to pay $60-90 per month for cable. Simple answer: I don’t. If it were less expensive or if I could purchase the channels I want, I would reconsider.

you got my vote… i’ve already done this for the past six months and have never looked back. hulu is dead cool but i have to hack it using a proxy because they only service the usa at this point in time. check out miro http://www.getmiro.com/ while you at it.

its a bit chunky but a real pleasure if you are using your computer to watch tv.
I like high resolution, so that’s why I still have cable. Why I still have 2 premium channels is because I’

Cable is good because it is in HDTV and there is more content. That’s my 2 cents.
Also, I like to skip ads with my HD Tivo. If I didn’t have HD Tivo and HD cable, then hulu might have a chance.
I agree that there are many reasons to stick with cable. In the end you do get better quality and you get to take advantage of things like Tivo, but for a minimalist TV watcher like me – the $80 a month was just not worth it.
Hulu has its own frustrations too. You only get to see the episodes they want you to see. For some shows they show all of them. For others, it is only selected shows or seasons. What I do love most about it though, is that I get to watch what I want – when I want (in many ways – similar to Tivo).

The picture and sound quality of satellite tv by comparison to cable TV networks shows that cable TV networks are limited in bandwidth capacity. This limitation gives cable providers little choice but to conserve bandwidth by transmitting broadcast signals at a much lower bitrate. Doing so allows them to compete with satellite tv networks in terms of channel capacity. However, the resulting picture and sound quality is just not as good as satellite tv.
